Coffee aribica moving on...

So, here is an update on the first coffee tree crop:
There are a few other plants there but 36 coffee trees.

Few things I've learned.
 I was over-watering them.
I should have left them in the humidity seedling trays longer... until the leaves start (or better yet, fully) pop out of the bean husk.
 - A little bit of fertilizer goes a long way (for the ones that have already had leaves emerge).
 - And, I should put them outside sooner.

This last point is pure speculation at this moment due to the behavior of various other similar plants in my collection. I now have a rack with 40% shade cloth on the back deck to hopefully prevent the Sun scorching their leaves so I'll be moving these outside too in the coming days.

First Coffee Tree Crop

My first batch of coffee trees are doing well. This picture was about half a week ago and already many more have opened. This is about 38 trees out of around 45 to 50 planted so not too bad. Learned quite a bit from this first batch.

Just the Start...

This will hopefully pan out to be something great for me as an outlet for one of my passions one day. I have a strong interest in plant and fungi and especially bonsai. I hope to use this as a platform to express that and maybe even inspire some others.

I'm in currently in the Atlanta area of Georgia in the United States. USDA hardiness zone 7B.

I'm JUST getting back into plants and whatnot so my collection is quite small currently.

  • A couple of common boxwood bonsai
  • Lavender Star bonsai
  • Lavender itself (I love that smell)
  • Three wisteria in the front yard ~4-5 feet in height
  • Japanese maple in the ground
  • Two azaleas (one pictured) in the grounnd
  • Azalea bonsai as a cutting from one of the ones in the yard
  • Coffee tree (arabica) ~5 feet in height, potted
  • ~30-40 coffee seedlings from that tree
  • Attempting to germinate Ficus benghalensis seeds
  • Quite a few other ornamentals, seedlings, and various herbs.
Not so interesting currently, but I'll note things that work out, and things that fail, in future posts. I hope to one day start a database of plants with instructions on germination, care, and such with specifics focusing on the outcome (bonsai versus ornamental versus fruiting/flowering). I hope you'll join me on my journeys.
